Nixa Missouri

As of the US Census[1] of 2000, there were 12,124 people, 4,654 households, and 3,448 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,969.1 people per square mile (759.9/kmē). There were 4,962 housing units at an average density of 805.9/sq mi (311.0/kmē). The racial makeup of the city was 97.43% White, 0.46% African American, 0.36% Native American, 0.43% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.30% from other races, and 1.01% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.26% of the population.

There were 4,654 households out of which 40.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.3% were married couples living together, 12.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.9% were non-families. 20.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 2.95.

In the city the population was spread out with 28.4% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 34.5% from 25 to 44, 17.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 89.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $37,655, and the median income for a family was $44,556. Males had a median income of $33,636 versus $21,737 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,774. About 8.1% of families and 9.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.3% of those under age 18 and 6.7% of those age 65 or over.

All the schools in Nixa are public. Currently, the Nixa R-2 School District operates five elementary schools for students in kindergarten through fourth grade, Matthews, Thomas, Espy, Century, and the newest, High Pointe Elementary (named so because it sits on the highest elevation in Christian County). It opened in August, 2007. There are also two elementary schools for students in the fifth and sixth grades (Inman and Main Street), one junior high school and one high school. The district is widely considered one of the best in Missouri, receiving the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education's Distinction in Performance award for the each of the last five years. Its Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) scores surpassed state averages in all 10 assessments.
